Privacy Policy
Storm Context Engine (“we”) runs www.stormcontext.com (“the site”). This policy explains what the site collects when you use it.
What we collect
- No accounts, no cookies, no advertising trackers. You can use everything on the site without signing in.
- Anonymous visit counts. When you open the site, your browser sends us one small event per visit, and one each time you open a storm. Each event holds: the time; the domain of the site that linked you here (for example
t.co), never the full address; the campaign tags in the link you followed (utm_source,utm_medium,utm_campaign), and whether X added its ad-click marker (we keep only that it was there, not its value); the kind of device (phone, tablet or desktop); and which storm you opened. We do not store your IP address or anything that could single you out. - In your browser only. A marker in session storage stops a reload from counting as a second visit; it goes when you close the tab. The site also remembers in local storage that you’ve read its opening notice. Neither is sent to us.
Server logs
Our hosting provider (Render) processes standard request information, including IP addresses, to deliver the site and keep it secure. Our servers use IP addresses briefly, in memory, to limit abusive traffic; we don’t store them.
Content your browser loads from other providers
To draw the map, imagery and alerts, your browser fetches files directly from these providers. They receive your IP address and standard browser information under their own privacy policies:
- CARTO — map tiles and map fonts (map data © OpenStreetMap contributors)
- Google Fonts — the site’s typeface
- NOAA — nowCOAST satellite, radar and sea-surface imagery; National Weather Service alerts (api.weather.gov)
- NASA GIBS — satellite imagery
- Iowa Environmental Mesonet — radar imagery
- RainViewer — radar imagery outside the US
How we use it
Visit counts tell us how many people use the site and how they found it. We don’t sell or share them, and we don’t use them to build advertising profiles.
Children
The site isn’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect information from them.
Changes and contact
We’ll post any changes here with a new effective date. Questions: contact@stormcontext.com.
